Weibo, the microblogging service in China that already has over 100 million users (and growing at 10 million users a month) has recently captured the attention of the World’s leading fashion brands.  

The Business of Fashion cites predictions from brokerage and investment group CLSA, that China is set to become the World’s largest luxury market with consumers spending increasing due to rising income levels. Indeed a number of fashion and luxury brands have already joined Weibo including Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Chanel, to name a few.

Robert Triefus, worldwide director of marketing and comminications at Gucci, noted that “55 percent of Chinese consumers like to read the history of their preferred luxury brand online, especially European brands”.  Weibo could be the perfect opportunity for brands to expand their presence in China and to learn about the shopping habits of Chinese consumers. Fashionista awaits Weibo to evolve into a Chinese- English offering…
