Fashion joins Google+

November 10th, 2011

Search engine giant Google has just launched Google+ Pages, a new service available on Google+ which means that companies as well as individuals can create their own interactive pages.

As reported in the Telegraph, fashion is taking a lead in the new venture – some of the first companies to join since the new service opened this week have been Burberry, H&M, River Island and Macy’s.

Google+, which at just 100 days old has 40 million users, hopes that the new service will help it in its bid to challenge the dominance of rival social network Facebook, which currently has over 800 million users.

While Facebook already allows companies to create pages, Google+ Pages includes some new features which will be attractive to companies. For example, its video hangout function allows company staff to talk face-to-face with customers online. Users can also add brands into Google Circles, to keep up with the latest news and updates.

Another new feature is Direct Connect, an additional search function – so anyone searching for a company or group name can type + in front of the company’s name, and will be directed to that company’s Google+ page. This feature, in connection with Google’s leading status as a search engine, should be a big draw to companies.

‘For businesses and brands,’ says Google, ‘Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you … All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello.’

Since their launch yesterday, Burberry’s page already has nearly 13,000 followers and H&M’s has over 11,000 – which leads Fashionista to think that more companies will shortly be joining them on Google+.
